SUCCESS STORIES

Jeremy (he/him)
IPSE Graduate - University of Calgary

In IPSE I enjoyed online workshops and hanging out with other students and Facilitators.  I enjoy the job hunting process and using online resources such as ALIS, etc. to help me build skills needed for the job search. I learned hiring teams like when one has previous experience volunteering and working and sometimes you have to work with people you might not always get along with. Teamwork is important. Additionally, it's not always about being perfect but about doing your best. Before you get paid you have to add in the number of hours you have worked and cover letters are not mandatory but are strongly encouraged. Always be clear and concise. I feel more confident in myself and have started thinking more about what career I am interested in. Through participating in class assignments and group projects I have learned more about myself and my abilities. One of my favourite memories from IPSE is participating in campus events such as daily morning prayer, the UCalgary festival, pet therapy and buying posters.

Siobhan (she/her)
GSS Graduate

With the help and support of my GSS facilitator, I was able to find two amazing jobs. I have been at both jobs for over 3 years. One job is at Old Navy. My position there is with costumer service where I help people in the fitting rooms, greet customers and fold clothes when I work on the floor. I also work at Safeway in customer service. At Safeway I bag groceries for customers,  gather all the carts and also black baskets and sweep the floors.  I also help customers do carry outs to their vehicles.

I really enjoyed my weekly meetings and coffee with my facilitators. The most valuable skills I learned in GSS were costumer service, becoming more independent, resume writing, time management, appropriate social media use, and learning how to use tools for stress management.

The GSS program changed my life because I have two amazing jobs that allow me to make my own money.  I can save to go on nice vacations, buy my own clothes and go out with my friends for social activities. I have made some friends at both my jobs. I learned to be more independent example, fill out request forms for days off and vacation, take public transit and have become more confident to ask for help.  The best and most memorable thing that happened was I got to be a background performer for two years on the CBC tv show Heartland. I love acting so this was my dream come true. I hope to do more background performing in the future.
